DICOM or Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine is an international standard to relay medical imaging and related data. Similarly, DICOM can also refer to the file format that is used to bundle and store this medical imaging data, often appearing as DCM or DCM30 (DICOM 3.0).
DICOM is a communication standard for the exchange of medical imaging information between computer systems. This comprehensive standard provides specifications for information content, file structures, code, and protocols for medical images and image-related information. This standard applies to images that are transmitted, stored, retrieved, printed, processed, and displayed.
DICOM files for a medical imaging procedure, including X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, or CT scans, often include several high-resolution images. As a result, DICOM files are quite large (up to or even exceeding 35 MB), which makes sending them securely via email a challenge.
Because of the size of most DICOM image sets, they generally exceed email attachment limitations unless they are compressed. Some DICOM viewing software includes an export function, which will automate the compression process, but other applications like FileCloud support large file sharing to retain file quality.
Traditionally, DICOM files have been relayed to patients or authorized users via compact disc (CD). CDs are loaded with image files, a DICOM reader, and information about the data origins. Recently, it has been found that these CD files could be manipulated without alerting users to the changes.
DICOM files can be viewed through a DICOM reader, often included on a CD or USB. Free DICOM readers are also available online, but these may not offer appropriate levels of security. FileCloud is a secure file storage and sharing platform that supports DICOM image viewing and storage.
